Lush 99.5fm, the only music station in Singapore playing indie music and continuously big on supporting local acts, has not reached a satisfactory number according to a recent Nielsen survey. Although the survey could have been executed more appropriately, it’s a survey nonetheless and the MDA has caught hold of it.
If our support is not shown, they risk getting pulled out. Without them, we can’t get our daily dose of indie and local tunes, and our 9-5s would seem like the day’s never going to end. No other music station delivers the genre of music you and I listen to.
It’s a fight for all things independent especially so amongst the commercial stereotypes. That’s why FUSSY is on board, especially since Lush was never about monetary benefits but supporting music.
- Mean, local rapper in the hip-hop scene in Singapore also has mad props for Lush. He told us, “They’ve been particularly supportive of us since day one. When no one dared to play local underground hip-hop music on the radio, Lush did. They gave us a platform to be heard. Gave us a reason to do music.”
Mean’s getting a lot of attention for his new track Emotions especially so after his set at Kaleidoscope held by Lush at Velvet Underground. But it’s his first single 24/7 that still appeals to us, ‘Then it’s back ta’, work, all day, err day, all day, err day, all day.’
He’ll be playing a full set next month 18th Sept at Velvet Underground for Kaleidoscope again so keep a lookout on his Facebook to get updated with his music or be intrigued by his wardrobe selection on Instagram.
If no one gives recognition and offers a platform to showcase hard work and passion, who will?
