TOP 5 REASONS YOU SHOULDN’T BUY FAKES

We learnt more about Republic of Fritz Hansen‘s craft and we realized that consumers are unaware of the craft and details of designer pieces thus not thinking twice about buying a fake. Fakes should not be considered as an alternative to a designer piece and FUSSY gives you the Top 5 Reasons you should not purchase another fake or if you put it undeservingly pleasant, a ‘replica’.
TECHNIQUE
  • // Technique of Series 7
  • Let’s first look at the technique of the Series 7 by Arne Jacobsen. Its durability speaks for itself in the video. Fakes break. Originals don’t. The craft of a design piece is so much more than the form and its ergonomics. It’s the technicalities of the craft that makes it that much more durable and desired for. For the Series 7, it’s actually made of different layers and not a single piece of wood, or two separate pieces then combined for that matter.

  • // Technique of the Egg
  • As for the Egg lounge chair, again by Arne Jacobsen, it’s actually hand stitched by artisans with decades of experience with the stitch count varying from 1253 to 1257. It takes 3 days just for one person to finish the stitching while the whole chair takes a staggering 5 to 7 weeks. Originals are sleek and made of one full piece of fabric or leather. For the leather upholstered Egg chairs, you can see some wrinkles at the back of the chair. The wrinkles are actually the actual marks of the cow’s back, where their shoulder blades are. Their seats are also protruded out of the Egg’s form. This prevents the user from experiencing discomfort.

  • Fake Egg Chair Singapore The Fussy Curator #fussysg
  • Although fakes try their best to have an exact copy of the originals, there are still major flaws in their execution. Fakes tend to be bulkier. Their fabrics might also be stitched together at obvious places, which breaks away from looking as ‘clean’ as it was intended to. The seats of fakes are also not protruded; therefore one would feel very uncomfortable since one’s thigh would be resting on the hard shell of the Egg chair.
USER EXPERIENCE
Which brings me to my next point. Manufacturers of fakes only care about replicating the design to the best of their ability, with no user experience in mind. Or rather, they are not capable of design thinking. That results in very poor execution with regards to the bulkiness of the Egg form, and the seats being more inward than they should be. One would be sitting on the edge of the seat, and not comfortably with their back against the shell. For the Egg lounge chair, it’s meant to make you feel enclosed, to give you some privacy in a somewhat public and open space. Definitely not to make you feel on guard sitting at the edge of the chair.

On the consumer side of things, why would one feel proud telling friends and family that it’s fake and just a copy of a designer chair? You’re proudly saying I paid money for a low quality scam and I’m proud to be scammed. The cost of manufacturing fakes is nowhere near their selling price and it’s a product without an identity. There’s no story behind it. You’re basically paying for a lifeless piece of furniture to be placed right in your home – a place where many would consider it to be an environment offering security and happiness. It’s no wonder why many of us are so lifeless and just living through the motions of society.

IDENTITY
Like us, residents of Singapore with our own Identification Card and number, products of Fritz Hansen have their own unique serial numbers. Each chair has its number engraved on it, accompanied with a credit card slip that you can show as proof of ownership. Every product you own from Fritz Hansen has an identity. Fakes can’t offer that. Fakes are reproductions of manufacturers who care nothing about the satisfaction you get from buying a product from them. They only care about maximizing the money they can make out from you.
DETAIL
  • Right down to its detail, PK80 by designer Poul Kjærholm has bolts and screws which are handmade. Yes, every single one of them. It’s only through being an expert in your field (and FUSSY) that you want what’s best for everything even if it comes down carving the bolts and screws by hand.
ARTISANS AND CRAFTSMEN
Understandably, the community of makers and craftsmen has been decreasing in numbers with the rise of technology and cultural influences. Even ones with passion for craft are placed in positions where monetary means are prioritized above everything else. By supporting fakes, you’re confirming that there is no need for them. What most fail to realize is that it’s through their craft that we are able to fully experience the detail, the design and the user experience that designers want to achieve. Without them, fakes have nothing to copy. The creativity and freedom to explore for designers would also be restricted.
